Grace's school in 3rd grade has done a pioneer lesson followed by a field trip every year now for years. (guys Justin works with talk about doing it when they were in school) It has been in the past an all nighter event but some land issues have come up and it's not maintained the way it used to be and now it's just a day use activity. Well they looked forward to this field trip ALL year and for good reason because they had SO MUCH FUN! I let the "Eagle Scout" take the reigns on this one since we were not sure what we were in for and freezing my tail off in the deep dark woods with no electricity is not my favorite thing. ;) They ended up however with a beautiful warm sunny day and the adventure was great!
Justin got wood chopping/sawing duty.
They got a few good lessons in old fashioned hard work!
They made their food including home made butter and biscuits.
Got a taste of what their bedroom could have looked like.
Carried lots of water from the creek.
To the washtub.
They made candles.
Mined for gold.
A good sport to volunteer for this one. ;)
They were told not to smile. (how depressing)
Then a fun one. They had such a great day and learned so many great things and lessons. I am thankful today for a warm home to sleep in, electricity and a washing machine....Amen. :)

We had our first summer BBQ with the Stoddard's for Brandon's birthday. When this time of the year hits and we can enjoy sunshine for a whole day without a coat then have some great food and fun till late because it's light past 6:00, then all is right with the world! Gavin has already begun his fascination with fire, I looked for him with the kids but nope! He wanted to be with man.....building fire (insert grunt)!!
